Moving Home Checklist
The key to a stress free move, is to start planning early.
Use our moving planner to help you organise your move.

Change of address card
One month before Moving Day - time to think of the following:-
  • order boxes and packing materials
  • compare quotes from several removal companies and remember to check their insurance provisions and terms of service carefully.  Do not make a definite booking, until contracts have been exchanged, instead, make an informal reservation.
  • begin throwing out anything you do not want, even those things you have kept for years, that you thought might come in handy, but never have.  Divide into rubbish, which can go to your local recycling centre, and donations which can go to a charity shop.
2 weeks before Moving Day
  • start eating the food in your freezer
  • send change of address cards to your family, friends and contacts
  • tell your bank and credit card providers, insurance companies an all other relevant companies, about your new address, giving them plenty of time to update their records
  • don't forget to inform the DVLA, TV Licensing the Inland Revenue and so on
  • get satellite TV and broadband set up for your new home
  • de-register from your doctor, dentist, optician etc., if your are moving out of their catchment area
  • check you have insurance cover for the move, and make sure it is adequate for your needs
  • if you think you will need to book storage space, organise that now
  • if you are going to have your house professionally cleaned, arrange it now
You may decide that you want to delay some of these notifications another week, if contract have not yet beeb exchanged
One week before moving day
  • arrange parking for the removal vans at the new house, introduce yourselves to your new neighbours and give them your moving in date
  • organise for the utilities to be switched off at your current home, when you move our, for the meters to be read and for services to be connected on the moving day at your new house.  Do not forget your phone and broadband services
  • set up a mail forwarding service through the Post Office
  • make a list of all important phone numbers, like estate agents, solicitors, removals company, insurance and utilities, along with account numbers and reference numbers
  • arrange babysitting for any young children and pet sitting if necessary.  If any of your children may need a day off school organise that now
  • ask the estate agent if the seller can supply a list of recommended contractors, if you are new to the area, such as a plumber or electrician for when you move in
  • visit your doctor and arrange supplies of any medicines you regularly take to keep you going until you find a new doctor
  • check the Fittings and Contents Form you completed at the beginning of the transaction to make sure that you do not take anything you promised to leave at the property or leave anything you promised to remove
  • put a copy of the Fittings and Contents form for the property you are purchasing in your moving bag, so that you can check when you get there that all has been left as set out on that form
  • don't forget to clear your loft, shed and garage
  • do anything you put off from the previous week
2 days before Moving Day
  • start defrosting the fridge and the freezer
  • cancel your milk deliveries and newspapers
  • take down any curtains and blinds you are not leaving and have then cleaned ready for hanging at the new house
  • reconfirm arrangements with your moving company
  • find out the locations of the water stopcock, service meters and fuse boxes at your new house
  • call the local council, or check online, the rubbish collection and recycling days in your new neighbourhood and if you are moving to a new county, arrange for delivery of their recycling bags, bins etc
  • pack up the computer and big electrical equipment, leaving out tablets and mobiles, to keep in touch with the world
  • pack up valuable delicate or small items
The day before Moving Day
  • collect any medicines, inhalers etc, that you will need over the next few days, along with paracetamol, plasters, glasses, razor, toothbrushes and a change of clothing and add to your personal luggage
  • collect together your keys, important documents, important phone numbers, removals paperwork, a calculator, an alarm clock, credit cards and add to your personal luggage
  • pack a box containing kettle, mugs, teaspoons, sugar, teabags, coffee, snacks, takeaway menus, scissors, a torch, radio, soap, toilet paper, towels, a corkscrew, bottle opener and a bottle of champagne to celebrate the move, and mark it clearly
  • pack uniforms, school bags, pe kits and school work in a separate box and mark it
  • fill your car up with petrol and plan your route.  Check for road works, so you can avoid them
  • pack a box of basic cleaning and repair products for the new house, including a dust pan and brush, wipes, strong bin liners and a toolkit and mark it clearly
  • get cash out for last minute emergencies, basic supplies and tips
  • recharge your mobile phone
On the Day
  • put your personal luggage in the car before the removers arrive, in case they put them in the van by mistake
  • do  the same with the box containing the kettle etc, should travel with someone in the van, and nominate someone to ensure it is put in the new kitchen area
  • leave a note with your contact details for the new owners if necessary
  • sit down and wait for the call from us to confirm we have completed and you can set off to your new home
